A Healthy Home for All Beings

A healthy home is an essential part of  preventive health care for us and our animal companions.  A friend and client suggested that I watch this video with Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Myron Wentz,  knowing that many of my foundational teachings and belief were encapsulated and visualized so well in this Health and Happiness summit.  I could not agree with him more after watching it.  These helpful suggestions are truly a foundation for our own preventive health care.  Certain cliche’s are cliche’s because they are so true.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is certainly one of these essential truths.  Many of the suggestions in this video pertain to our animal friends as well.   Though animals are not exposed to mercury in dental fillings, but they are exposed through thimerisol in vaccines.

As Dr. Wentz states regarding fluoride outgassing from frying pans, often times our animal friends are truly the canary in the cage.  This is quite evident more often than we might realize.  A relative of mine inquired about the sudden onset of asthma in her beloved cat.  Their veterinarian made the correct diagnosis and prescribed the correct medications.  However, too often, one does not question why the animal developed this condition suddenly in the first place.  My first question was what was different in the environment and had them review any changes in the house.  When I was visiting them and slept in the guestroom, I actually began to cough as I smelled something that was sickeningly sweet and toxic.  It was there new fabric fresheners that they put in the wash.  When discussing this with them, her husband actually said that he was coughing ever since that new freshener was used as well.  I suggested to stop using them and see how the cat and her husband were doing.  That solved the problem and they were able to stop using an inhaler medication and oral medication for the cat and her husband stopped coughing as well.  So often, we assume that many of these chemicals that permeate our environment are deemed healthy.  Often times, it is the exact opposite.  As my readers know, I am a huge proponent of the “Precautionary Principle”.  Science cannot possibly keep up with all the new chemicals we are exposed to.  Let us try to keep our environments as simple, back to basics and healthy as possible.  In the textbook I edited on Complementary and Alternative Medicine back in 1998, I had presented an environmental questionnaire developed by a human physician and one of the founders of the American College of Environmental Medicine  that I felt should be part of every veterinarians toolkit.  Instead of a life on hazardous pharmaceuticals, my relative’s cat is happy and free of asthma simply by figuring out the environmental cause of the asthma.  This is just one small example.

I was also thrilled to see that Dr. Wentz discussed electromagnetic pollution as I have written a number of blog posts about this ever increasing risk. I suggest that you read Dr. Wentz’s book and conduct an evaluation of your home and remove any toxins that can be hazardous to you and your animal companion’s health.  We will discuss more of the environmental triggers and potential health concerns in future blog posts.

May you and your kindred spirits live in a healthy, happy, toxin free environment.

Preventive Health: Electromagnetic Radiation Awareness for All Beings and Especially Our Kindred Bee’s

After a brief hiatus from blogging, I have returned questioning what the best purpose of my sharings with readers might be.  There are numerous places on the web where one can view heartwarming photo’s of animals that stimulate joy in ourselves.  There are wonderful websites bringing awareness to the alleviation of suffering in animals.  There are more and more photographic demonstrations of the bond between many species.  I feel like sharing news about animal health care that might not be readily available everywhere as well as insights into how new perspectives on the human animal bond can be of benefit to all beings.

With this focus in mind, there appears to be more and more research documenting the potentially detrimental effects of electromagnetic radiation (emr) on bee’s and actually on all beings.  This article on the detrimental effects of smart meters and their collectors in California.  It seems that in this day and age of prioritizing the hypothetical benefits of technology for corporate financial gain over the potential adverse health effects for all beings,  the damage to the health living beings is simply considered collateral damage.  The “precautionary principle” is not even considered.  There are very simple ways to avoid these hazardous health effects, yet corporations do not seem to care at all.  There is continued documentation of the hazardous effects of extended cell phone use as well, yet it too is ignored.  As electromagnetic radiation continues to permeate our environments, we do not look at the cumulative effects on our bodies.  More and more people are becoming electromagnetically sensitive.  Skeptics may cynically state that it is “all in their heads” and actually some of the hazardous emr effects are indeed impacting on the brain.  Animals do not lie though.  If one see’s the detrimental effects on bee’s and other animals, any argument regarding nocebo effect (negative placebo effect) goes out the door.

This article in Global Research offers an excellent brief review of studies.  This video lecture by prominent researchers offers an extended video explaining these effects further.

This article by Dr. Mercola also shares some interesting information regarding emr effects on health.

The growing amount of information should ideally prompt health authorities to acknowledge that these concerns are valid and override any corporate financial interests.   I have seen anecdotal cases of where emr has had significant adverse effects on dogs including increased incidence of seizures in a dog living under high power tension wires.  At the very least, perhaps this post can help make more animal lovers aware of the potential adverse health effects on their animal companions and themselves and then help spread that word and make a positive difference in this world.

As we choose to create a healthier, happier, more compassionate world, the regulation of emr radiation needs to be recognized as an important component to a healthy environment.

Natural Cancer Therapies

Exposure to Toxins

Cancer has quickly become one of the top causes of death in our companion animals.  It is well accepted now that the primary cause of many diseases is inflammation, from heart disease, to allergies, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease to cancer.  Over the decades of pioneering holistic integrative veterinary care, I have witnessed a tremendous increase in the incidence of cancer.  I believe it is naive to believe that it is just because we have better diagnostics.  Certainly there is a genetic predisposition for certain types of cancer in certain dog breeds, yet, a large percentage is secondary to all the toxic environmental exposures stimulating a chronic inflammation as well as the build up of toxins in the body.   There is a great deal of debate as to what role overvaccination, poor quality pet foods, chronic exposure to pesticides, herbicides etc. have on the body often then manifesting as cancer.  Personally, I am of the belief there is a tipping point of a toxic overload that then can result in the development of cancer.  This article on the use of baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, as a possible treatment for cancer stimulated the writing of this post.

Throughout my career I have been studying, searching and evaluating various natural, nontoxic therapies for cancer.  I have found that a combination of appropriate dietary management, nutraceuticals, chinese herbal formula’s, medicinal mushrooms and vitamins can cause a significant improvement in cancer, sometimes leading to complete remission or at least improving the quality and length of an animal’s life.  Recently I came across this interesting article on the use of baking soda in the treatment of Cancer.  The study is actually being conducted at the University of Arizona Medical School.  I have been aware of this treatment approach, but have not used it extensively in animals.  After reviewing the article, I find that there is indeed some merit in exploring the use of sodium bicarbonate, baking soda in the treatment of cancer in animals.  I will be exploring this approach more and discuss possible studies in animals.  I will keep you posted.

As with many conditions, the ideal is prevention rather than treatment.  The more we can optimize an animals nutrition and minimize exposure to toxins, the better the odds that one will not develop cancer.  Unfortunately with the increased exposure to more and more toxins, pesticides, poor quality food, and the so called “elephant in the living room”, the exposure to the increased radiation from the Fukushima diseaster, we will have to deal with cancer in animals as well as humans more frequently.  I will continue my commitment to explore natural, nontoxic approaches to help all of us live longer, happier, healthier lives.

From Dinosaur to Chic: The Quiet of Nature

Serenity

A client and dear friend forwarded me this wonderful  New York Times opinion article written by a favorite author of mine, Pico Iyer, from December 29, 2011 titled “The Joy of Quiet”.  My clients comment to me after reading the article, was:   “As I sit quietly at night, with the only sound in my home being the breathing of my asthmatic cat, who knew that I had gone from dinosaur to cutting edge chic?” I feel like this amusing, but truthful article is an appropriate beginning blog post for the New Year as silence and quiet time in nature are a key part of the foundation of the kindred spirits project.  My friend also commented  ”I thought this would resonate with you”.  It did indeed.  I felt like Pico personally endorsed and reaffirmed my own decisions and that perhaps, I no longer needed to consider myself a dinosaur for choosing to live on a quieter, more remote island, living a more peaceful life with less nonstop connection to the outer world. I chuckled as I read it and thought, oh, I am not the only one who has made a conscious choice like that.   Cool beans, my choices are now becoming chic for a new generation!

After living around the greater New York area most of my life, and heading off  to quiet retreats around the world whenever possible to rebalance my attunement to the calmer vibrational frequencies of nature, and then finally moving to a more tranquil island,  I too feel acknowledged by this article.  It is not easy to make these conscious choices as the majority of the population chooses to stay tuned to the world 24/7 , competing to survive, and thriving on the nonstop busy mind traffic. Like a frog in boiling water society has slowly adapted to the increase in noise, visual, water and air pollution.  All the chronic busyness and stress impacts on our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual states.  After my first ten years of veterinary practice, being on emergency call every other night and inevitably being called out every other night, I was well aware of that stress and the toll it took on me and my soul yearned for disconnection from phones, beepers, etc. (more…)

Polar Bears Receive Protection

Kudos to Canada for acknowledging the obvious, that Polar Bears are a greatly endangered species due to the current climate crisis and now will receive deserved protection according to this article in the Huffington Post. As their habitat melts and we continuously hear of polar bear cubs drowning because they cannot reach enough ice to land somewhere, governments need to take action right now to try to curb the climate change that is endangering polar bears. Their fight for survival is heroic as we hear of polar bears heading south and hear other fascinating anecdotes about polar bears breeding with grizzly bears where they are beginning to interact. Actually in British Columbia, there is one area, the Great Bear Rain Forest or the Spirit Bear Rain Forest where a small percentage of the black bears in this region carry a recessive gene to be white. It is believed that this may date back to the last ice age. During Salmon runs in September these white black bears can be seen along the shoreline going for salmon. They are such an amazing site that the first nation tribes in the area called them spirit bears.

The irony of it is that their is a proposal for an oil pipeline from the Alberta Tar Sands to the British Columbia coastline directly through the Spirit Bear Rain Forest, the last great temperate rain forest left in the world. Not only is one of the greatest causes of this climate crisis right there in the Alberta Tar Sands, but the proposed oil pipeline will take it through the Spirit Bear Rainforest where the last vestiges of the last ice age still remain.

I find it amazing that we are apparently seeing polar bears consciously or unconsciously adapting to survival and climate change by interbreeding with grizzly bears that they are beginning to share territory with. I ponder if anything or what is going on in their psyches that they are interbreeding. Are they just in the same territory and then recognize grizzlies as not that different from them, or their something at a trans-species level of consciousness or subconsciousness that is happening, beyond our current understanding.
One can only ponder and speculate. The end result though appears to be a current adaptation for survival as the world changes around them. What are your thoughts? Is there some bigger picture, beyond our comprehension that is creating this attempt for survival?

Mayan Elders Share Their View on 2012: Kindred Futures

Mayan Elder Explains 2012
Many clients, friends  and  blog readers often ask me  what my thoughts and insights are about 2012 and all the varied predictions in regards to my mission statement and vision of the Kindred Spirits Project.    You can read so many interesting and bizarre views on the internet on the subject proposing everything from predictions that it is the end of the world, cataclysm, armageddon, solar flare destruction, the blossoming of a new age,  multi-dimensional shifts, consciousness shifts etc. etc.  Often these refer back to the Mayan calendar as the starting point.  Being a free range thinker so to speak, I pondered the question, explored the different perspectives, looked for scientific evidence for any of the theories and danced between skepticism and open minded inquisitive listening.  My tentative view at this moment in time is  ”I don’t know”.  ”I don’t know”, by the way,   is  one of my favorite quotes from one of my old teachers, Ram Dass, former Harvard Psychology Professor and spiritual teacher, who used to find great freedom and rejoice in saying that.

Recently though, I just came across this personal letter and address by one of the key elders, Wandering Wolf,  in the Mayan Culture.  I found this letter and the information included in it to be more honest than anything else I have seen or heard. There is a new film being created based on the interviews with Wandering Wolf called “Shift of the Ages”. You can watch trailers for it on Youtube. I found this one video offering a brief explanation of the Mayan Elder Explains 2012 quite informative. (more…)

Law of Mother Earth: Nature and Humans Have the Same Rights

Llama in Bolivia

Law of Mother Earth from Bolivia

The Kindred Spirits Project goal to assist in creating a world based on loving kindness and compassion for all beings has reached a milestone with the creation of the “Law of Mother Earth”, by thePresident of Bolivia, Evo Morales, the first indigenous leader of Bolivia on International Earth Day 2011. This is the world’s first legislation that grants to nature rights equal to humans, The Law of Mother Earth. Wikipedia offers the best summary I have seen of the Law of Mother Earth.
According to the Guardian, Bolivia’s Foreign Minister, David Choquehuanca, states that “In Bolivia we seek a return to balance, a harmonious life not only between individuals but between man and nature, so today must be a day of reflection of awareness of all to care for our Mother Earth and take timely means to bring our mother back to its natural balance”.

The first article of the Law of Mother Earth says that every human activity has to “achieve dynamic balance with the cycles and processes inherent in Mother Earth.” This Law defines Mother Earth as “a unique, indivisible, self-regulating community of interrelated beings that sustains, contains and reproduces all beings.” Mother Earth is considered a conscious being and sacred according to most indigenous cultures.
President Morales shares some prescient thoughts such as “the planet can live without humans, but humans can not live without the planet”. (more…)

Garden Safety Awareness for your Dogs and Cats

One of my dear clients brought this to my awareness and I realized that we need to share this information with all dog and cat caretakers. Please inform every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don’t have a
pet, please pass this to those who do. My client shared this with me today. Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from one of the common box stores to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took their dog out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s web site,
they found the statement “This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats”. (more…)

Gross National Happiness, Ecobuddhism and Respect for All Beings

We all want to be happy. Sharing our lives with other animals brings great joy to animal lovers. It seems that the more people are in nature, sharing their lives with animals, the happier they become. Even city dwellers yearn to get out of the city on weekends to experience some connection with nature and animals. There is a new field and website called “Ecological Buddhism” where the principles of respect for all beings meets ecology. There are many excellent articles and video’s on this subject and what we can do.
One article on the global climate emergency impacts on all of us and what we can do. (more…)
